Thermal audits reveal what we cannot see

Three out of ten enclosures are too hot for the power electronics and controls inside them. The trick is to identify the potential areas of problems so they can be addressed.

Thermal management of electrical enclosures leads to increased reliability!

Electrical panels are designed, installed, and commissioned. From there they are forgotten until something happens. Many times, the components that failed reached the end of their run life prematurely due to the thermal conditions of their environment. Knowing the thermal state of each panel puts you in control to act and correct an issue before it turns into a problem.

How can you possibly know the thermal state of your electrical panels?

Luckily for you it is easier than you think. Here is our suggested path forward:

  • Assess: Our team will perform a thermal audit based on your guidelines to ensure we examine the equipment that matters most. Several data points will need to be recorded for each enclosure, including:
    • Enclosure name/ID
    • Open surfaces (surfaces that are not blocked, top/bottom/back/left/right)
    • Minimum and maximum ambient temperature in your environment
    • Your minimum and maximum desired operating temperature inside the enclosure
    • Ambient temperature within 3 feet of the enclosure
    • Temperature of the top surface of the enclosure.
    • Enclosure material (ie steel).
    • Mounting options for the cooler (top, side, interior)
    • NEMA rating of the enclosure (12, 4X, etc.)
  • Brainstorm: We examine the data and determine the areas of risk. From those determinations we will examine what the best technology selection would be and what size requirements would be needed to provide adequate cooling.
  • Implement: You will be provided a comprehensive report detailing where to act and with what level of severity the equipment should be treated. You will have the map to improved reliability and get to determine when and what actions you will confidently take.
